ReadingThis week you are reading a book or text of your choice. When you have read the text add a comment to your teacher's post with the title of the book and your favourite sentence from it to your class blog. ViewingThis is a new task that we have not completed before. You need to use Youtube or another site to watch at least one video which will help you with your Scratch project or your Genius Hour project. Post the link to your video or embed it into your post for your teacher and classmates to see. As well as the video you need to have two sentences explaining what you learnt from the video and/or how it has helped you master a new skill.
MathsThere are two tasks for Maths this week:
It is expected that you do some questions on Sumdog each day this week. This will help you to review maths concepts you already know and to challenge yourself to answer some harder questions. Your goal is to answer 1000 questions during the contest (ends Thursday evening). You have been introduced to Scratch Programming last week. Your easy challenge is to draw a square. If you master this quickly, you might like to attempt to draw a triangle or another 2D shape as well. Can you make a picture or design using these shapes? SpellingThis week you are focusing on practising some adjectives that might be useful for making a card for someone special. ;-) Complete the activities in Spelling City then use some or all of these words to create a Typography design. ReadingThis term we have been reading a lot of books and articles with an historical theme. This week you should continue reading books of your own choice, but also read about your explorer to gather information for your timeline. Add any dates and events to your Google Slide or word document. ScienceThere is no writing task this week. Instead, you will need to plan and conduct an experiment to test the properties of some materials. You will begin the plan in class and complete the activity at home.
You will design a simple experiment to compare plastic to other materials by investigating one of the properties of materials (such as transparency, durability, flexibility, strength, magnetism etc). Use the Experiment Plan to design your experiment. Gather the materials you need for your experiment. When you have conducted your experiment, you will report your findings to the rest of the class. Writing
This week you will write a paragraph about a famous person. Look at the pictures below and select one of these people to write about. Your paragraph will be about five sentences long. Use this structure to write your paragraph.
You may include more sentences to extend your ideas or to elaborate on an interesting point. You will need to read a little bit to find out some interesting information about the person. Remember to write sentences with correct punctuation and to check your spelling before you post your work to the class blog. Hint: Use the "search by image" function in Google to find out who each person is before you make your selection. Images are public domain. Reading
Your task is to read material related to your Genius Hour Project. You might read it in a book or find it in a Google search. When you have done your reading leave a comment on your teacher's post about Genius Hour.
MAthematics
Your teacher has set you some videos and an interactive activity on Studyladder to help you learn how to subtract amounts from 1000. These videos will help you to learn how to calculate change owed.
Spelling
This week you are looking at spelling words ending in 'tion'. We have looked at words with this spelling pattern before, but make sure you take the time to watch the video to refresh your memory.
Science
Remember we will be completing a science experiment in the next couple of weeks. To prepare for it each person needs to bring in a few nuts/bolts and or screws and a clean glass jar with a lid. You need to put your nuts/bolts in a ziplock bag clearly marked with your name. You also need to write your name in permanent marker on the bottom of your jar.
Reading
Find out three interesting facts about the author of the book you are currently reading and post them as a reply to your teacher's blog post which is titled 'History Writers'.
Choose the correct link below to go to your teacher's post: Spelling
This week we are revisiting homophones. One of your ongoing learning goals is to recognize homophones and know how to use the context to choose the correct spelling.
Mathematics
Your teacher has set some activities for you to complete in Study Ladder. You will be working with decimal fractions in these activities.
Writing
The theme for this week is "Nature". You need to choose one of the prompts from below and using to write a story.
We are looking for accurate spelling and punctuation, but also for appropriate use of paragraphs to organise your ideas. Explain how this tree ended up with such a silly face. If sharks could talk what do you think they would say? Tell a story using this animal as the main character. Don't forget that your main home task is to revise and edit your work before publishing it to your class blog. You should get some feedback from someone else to help to improve your spelling, punctuation and expression. Writing
The theme for this week is "Food". Each prompt this week requires you to write for a different purpose so you will need to think carefully about the way you structure your writing.
We are looking for accurate spelling and punctuation, but also for appropriate use of paragraphs to organise your ideas. Write a story using the Stinky Cheese Man as your main character. Tell about a time when you tried a new food. What was your reaction? Would you eat it again? Should schools ban junk food? Don't forget that your main home task is to revise and edit your work before publishing it to your class blog. You should get some feedback from someone else to help to improve your spelling, punctuation and expression. Reading
Continue reading books with a history theme. In a short while you are going to be asked to select one book to review. Please begin thinking about which book you will choose and make sure you have read this book thoroughly.
Spelling
This week you will be learning to build words using the prefixes mis-, un- and dis-. These prefixes change the meaning of the original word to the opposite meaning.
Mathematics
An assessment has been set in Sumdog for you to complete this week. Just over an hour has been allocated for you to complete the 50 questions.
