Examining Visual Texts
When we look closely at visual or multimodal texts, we can understand what the author, illustrator or creator is trying to tell us by using "semiotic systems". Semiotic systems are the different ways that meaning can be made through the text. Look at this summary of the five semiotic systems and then use these ways of looking at a text to try to work out how the author is presenting a message.
Look closely at p18 and 19 of the text, "How to Avoid Being a Convict Sent to Australia". Use the worksheet to record your thinking about how the author and illustrator have used the semiotic systems to make meaning.

Point of View
When we read, we should consider the point of view of the author to understand their opinion. Look at these websites created by Year 4 students at St Ita's at Dutton Park. They have researched the life of a convict from the First Fleet and written three blog posts from the convict's point of view.
Information through Pictures
Look at this excerpt from Captain Arthur Phillip and the First Fleet by Melanie Guile. Consider how the author and illustrator have used semiotic systems to give a message.
Writing a Narrative
Write a narrative that is set in the time period around 1788. Think about the point of view you are trying to portray. Are you writing from the perspective of a convict, a soldier or an indigenous Australian? Make sure you include an interesting problem and a clever solution.
When you have finished writing, use the criteria to edit and revise your work. What score would you get?
